SUMMARY:Seminar Algebra and Geometry: Pietro Beri (Université de Lorraine/
 Goethe Universität Frankfurt)
DESCRIPTION:Given a variety embedded in projective space\, its secant varie
ty is the closure of the union of all lines secant to it. We explore the r
ole that secant varieties can play in the construction of projective model
 s of hyper-Kähler manifolds.\\r\\nIn joint work with Agostini\, Giovenzan
a and Ríos-Ortiz\, we describe the singular locus of secant varieties\, u
sing recent results of Choi\, Lacini\, Park and Sheridan that generalize t
he classical Terracini's lemma. Our description provides a tool for constr
ucting projective models and leads to further examples\, while also reveal
ing geometric features of independent interest.
