Seminar Analysis and Mathematical Physics: In-Jee Jeong (Seoul National University)
The evolution of incompressible inviscid fluids is governed by the Euler equations. We consider the dynamics of vortex rings, which are axisymmetric solutions to the three dimensional Euler equations with concentrated axial vorticity. We prove the following infinite norm growth results: (i) filamentation (formation of a long tail) behavior from a single vortex ring, and (ii) vortex stretching from the "collision" of two vortex rings with opposite signs.
