Department

History

In 2010, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Computer Science merged to form the joint Department of Mathematics and Computer Science with a total of 14 professorships. With this merger, the Mathematical Institute with its centuries-old history and the young and growing Department of Computer Science were merged into a single organisational unit.

At the beginning of 2015, the department moved from its previous five locations to its new joint domicile at Spiegelgasse 1/5. At Spiegelgasse, the department has workplaces, seminar rooms, learning places for students, computer laboratories, and a library.

Currently the department has 16 professorships plus three SNFS professorships.

Events in the department’s development since the merger:
10_2019Prof. Ivan Dokmanić (professor of data analytics) begins his position
08_2019Prof. Chiara Saffirio (SNSF professor of Mathematical Physics) begins her position.
06_2019Prof. Giusi Moffa (assistant professor of statistics) begins her position. This appointment supports the development of the research focus on stochastics.
04_2019Prof. Julia Vogt (assistant professor of adaptive systems and medical data science) leaves the department to accept a position at ETH Zurich.
06_2018Prof. David Belius (SNSF professor of probability theory) begins his position.
05_2018A new assistant professorship in statistics (non-tenure track) is created to support the development of the research focus on stochastics.
