Prof. Dr. Jiří Černý new Professor in Probability Theory
Prof. Dr. Jiří Černý, new Professor in Probability Theory, joined the Mathematics Section in February 2018. Jiří Černý has been professor at the University of Vienna since 2012. He studied Physics at the Karls-University in Prag. He received his doctorate in Mathematics 2003 from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). He then worked as a Postdoc at the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics in Berlin and again at Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). From 2007 until 2012 he was Heinz-Hopf-Lecturer at ETH Zurich.
Černý’s central research area is probability theory and its applications in physics in particular but also in biology and finance. The focus of his interest is, above all, the dynamics of spin glasses, so-called random walks in random environments, and various problems of percolation.
