Master Data Science
The Master’s program in Data Science at the University of Basel combines a strong fundamental preparation in mathematics, statistics, and machine learning with a complete repertoire of systems and software design courses to effectively build computational infrastructure for efficient and secure handling of modern datasets. Students enrolling in the program will enjoy a modern curriculum structured into Mathematical Foundations, Machine Learning Foundations, and Distributed Systems Foundations. They will benefit from excellent teaching by internationally renowned mathematicians and computer scientists and maintain close links with the cutting-edge research. Through the synergy with our University‘s Center for Data Analytics the students will have the opportunity to write their Master‘s thesis centered around real datasets from a variety of disciplines.
Graduates of the Master’s program Data Science will have the skills to systematically analyze datasets from diverse domains to extract new insights, knowledge, and inform decision and policy making. They will be up to date with the current state of machine learning, deep learning, applied statistics and distributed systems, and prepared to independently tackle the permanent change in this dynamic field.
The two-year program in Data Science concludes with the degree of a Master of Science in Data Science. This Master’s degree can be naturally complemented by independent research work through a doctorate in Computer Science or Mathematics, in particular in the context of the PhD Program Data Science at our Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, or in other related fields.
Data Science studies at the University of Basel open up an enormous range of careers in business and industry and provide the foundational theoretical knowledge for a career in research and academia – data scientists are currently the most sought-after and best paid professionals in practically any line of work.
