VR Exposition wins OpenGLAM 2018 in the category Brand New

Mahnaz Amiri Parian, Ralph Gasser, Ivan Giangreco and Silvan Heller members of the Research Group Databases and Information Systems (DBIS) and Loris Sauter, student at the Department für Mathematics and Computer Science, won the Swiss GLAMhack Award 2018 in the category Brand New for the most innovative project. The Swiss GLAMhack Award was given at the 4th Swiss Open Cultural Data Hackathon, which took place at Landesmuseum in Zurich from 26 to 28 October 2018.

With the project "Walking around the Globe", the team developed within three days a sophisticated system that can be used for virtual exhibitions by both curators and museum visitors. Museum visitors can move around in the virtual 3D exhibition, view museum objects in detail that often cannot be shown to the general public due to their fragility or limited space, for example, and receive further information on each object thanks to the integrated audio guide. On the other hand, curators can use the system to design exhibitions and gain a first impression of how they might look in reality - a task that is particularly important in curator training.
