Abstract: Artificial intelligence (AI) has recently revolutionized a wide range of fields, including healthcare and biotechnology, industry and information technology, and scientific research. For data scientists, understanding the current challenges and opportunities across these domains is essential, as such insight helps define the objectives and scope of academic research projects where AI can provide impactful solutions. The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is Switzerland’s largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences. In collaboration with the Swiss Data Science Center (SDSC), PSI has made significant investments in AI and data science to support research across diverse areas, including health innovation, climate, and energy. Data science is particularly intriguing in the context of PSI’s large-scale imaging facilities, such as the Swiss Light Source (SLS) and the Swiss X-ray Free-Electron Laser (SwissFEL). This presentation begins with an overview of the key challenges faced by large imaging facilities in healthcare and scientific discovery. It then highlights the opportunities for AI and machine learning in this domain and presents several ongoing AI-driven projects at PSI.
