Students from Oberwil visited the DMI as part of their technology week
This week, the DMI was visited by Class 2a from Gymnasium Oberwil. The class, focusing on applications of Mathematics/Physics, learned about the mathematics and computer science programs as part of their technology week.
Dr. Christine Zehrt introduced the mathematics program and cleared up old misconceptions. She emphasized that mathematics is exciting, where creativity and enjoyment in problem-solving are key, and that there are still countless mathematical problems waiting to be solved. She also highlighted that the mathematics program in Basel stands out due to excellent student-to-faculty ratios and strong connections between students from different semesters.
Prof. Heiko Schuldt then provided information about the computer science program in Basel. He explained the challenges computer scientists face, such as managing vast amounts of data. For instance, the Large Hadron Collider, a particle accelerator at CERN, generates around 30 petabytes of data per year. He also discussed new developments and their potential applications, using the discovery of a new antibiotic through artificial intelligence as an example.
The third part of the successful visit was led by PhD student Rahel Arnold. She spoke about her research, specifically on searching large image and video collections and how the results of these searches can be used, for example, to present images in a virtual museum.
At the end, the students had the chance to explore the virtual museum and try out computer games developed and programmed by second-semester students as part of the "Programmier Projekt" course, which they visibly enjoyed.
