In this talk I will give an overview of the history of the André-Oort conjecture and its resolution last year after the final steps were made in work of Pila, Shankar, Tsimerman, Esnault and Groechenig as well as Binyamini, Yafaev and myself. I will focus on the key insights and ideas related to model theory and transcendence theory.
