Emeritus Professor of Mathematics

Curriculum vitae

Hanspeter Kraft's research at the University of Basel focuses on algebraic transformation groups and classical invariant theory. He investigates how groups act on algebraic varieties, how orbits, stabilizers and invariants arise and how spaces of orbits can be described algebraically. He is concerned, for example, with when the automorphism group of an affine variety fixes it up to isomorphism and how the invariant rings and quotient spaces are constructed. His work combines algebraic geometry, group theory and commutative algebra and makes important contributions to the understanding of how symmetries work structurally in geometric contexts and which algebraic data they generate.
