We begin with a short introduction to the theory of toric varieties, that means, equivariant embeddings of the algebraic torus (k✲)ⁿ. Then we indicate how the methods of toric geometry can be extended to more general torus actions. As an application, we discuss recent classification results for Fano varieties.
