Hyperbolic manifolds of small volume

I will recall the classical constructions for hyperbolic manifolds of finite volume, and in particular the method based on arithmetic groups. I will then discuss a conjecture that states that except in dimension n=3, the complete hyperbolic n-manifold of the smallest volume is noncompact (joint work with Misha Belolipetsky).
