The Master’s program in Data Science at the University of Basel combines a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics, and machine learning with a comprehensive range of courses in distributed systems and software design. Students benefit from a modern curriculum structured into the modules Mathematical Foundations, Machine Learning Foundations, and Systems Foundations. They receive excellent instruction from internationally renowned mathematicians and computer scientists and are closely connected to cutting-edge research. In collaboration with the university’s Center for Data Analytics, students also have the opportunity to write their master’s thesis based on real-world datasets from a variety of disciplines.

Graduates of the Master’s program in Data Science possess the skills to systematically analyze datasets from a wide range of application domains in order to generate new insights and knowledge and to support well-informed decision-making and policy processes. They are up to date in machine learning, deep learning, applied statistics, and distributed systems, and are well prepared to independently navigate the ongoing changes in this dynamic field.

The two-year program concludes with the degree of Master of Science in Data Science. This degree can ideally be complemented by independent research work in the context of a doctorate in Computer Science or Mathematics, particularly within the PhD Program in Data Science at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science or in related fields.

Studying Data Science at the University of Basel opens up diverse career opportunities in business and industry while also providing the theoretical foundation for a career in research and academia. Data scientists are currently among the most sought-after and highly paid professionals across nearly all sectors.
